Aubrey Lee Smith, affectionately known as "Smitty," passed away on June 2, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on August 7, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia, he brought joy and warmth to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His jolly disposition and good-hearted nature made him a beloved figure in both his family and community.
Smitty's educational journey culminated at Maggie L Walker High School, where he laid the foundation for a life characterized by dedication and service. Following his graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, a time in his life that instilled in him a sense of duty and camaraderie. His commitment to serving others continued beyond his military years as he took on the role of a Mail Clerk at First Wheat Security, where he worked diligently until his retirement.
Aubrey was a family man at heart. He cherished the time spent with his life companion, Gladys Murrell, and was a devoted father to his daughter, Jocelyn Smith. His legacy extends through his four sons, Aubrey Jr.(Pateseia), Cedric(Rebecca Ahern), Felix, and Gabriel Smith; all of whom carry forward his values and spirit. Additionally, he was a beloved grandfather to several grandchildren and a caring stepfather to Tiffany Wright and Dwayne (Michelle) and George Murrell. He is remembered fondly by a host of nieces, nephews among them devoted David and Sandy Fitzgerald and Angela Daniels cousins, and other relatives and friends whose lives he touched.
Smitty's contributions to his community were notable. He was an active member of the Military Retiree's Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), connecting with fellow veterans and offering his support to those in need. He was also proud of his role as an usher at Fifth Baptist Church, where he dedicated his time to serving his congregation with grace and humility.
In addition to his numerous accomplishments, Smitty was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother, who greeted him with open arms in the afterlife.
As we remember Aubrey Lee Smith, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and a commitment to family and community. His kind spirit will be profoundly missed, yet his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
