Dorothy Giles, a beloved matriarch and esteemed supervisor at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital in the nursing department, passed away on November 30, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on March 3, 1931, in Richmond, Virginia, Dorothy led a life infused with love, dedication, and community spirit.
Dorothy was a proud graduate of Armstrong High School and furthered her education at Virginia Union University in Richmond. Throughout her career, she embraced her role at the hospital with passion and commitment, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues and those she served.
Known for her well-loved and outgoing personality, Dorothy brought joy to all who knew her. Her warmth was most evident during family gatherings, particularly on Thanksgiving and Christmas, when she delighted in cooking for her loved ones and hosting festive celebrations. Family was at the heart of her life; she cherished every moment spent with them and strongly believed in the importance of family structure.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dorothy was immensely proud of her grandchildren, who brought her great joy and fulfillment. She enjoyed attending church and was an avid fan of watching game shows on television, activities that highlighted her vibrant and engaging spirit.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons, John Giles, who is engaged to Trudy Coleman, and David J. Giles, who is married to Vangie. She also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, along with a host of cousins and other relatives and friends who will remember her fondly.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John S. Giles. Her legacy of love, faith, and devotion will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
A funeral service in honor of Dorothy will take place on December 17, 2025, at Fifth Baptist Church, located at 1415 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23220, beginning at 1:00 PM
Dorothy Giles will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her loving nature, her commitment to family, and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable lifetime.
