Elder James Henry Hawkins

Elder James Henry Hawkins, affectionately known as Jim, was born on August 16, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia. He passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and devotion that touched the lives of everyone he met. James' educational journey began in Richmond Public Schools, including Maggie L. Walker High School, followed by his profound theological studies at the Virginia Union University School of Theology. He dedicated his life to serving others, as an honorary Doctor of Divinity, and became a prominent figure in his community. His career was multifaceted, including serving as an Equal Employment Opportunity officer for Richmond Redevelopment Housing Authority. Notably, he held the esteemed position of being the first black building inspector for Chesterfield County and was the Founder and Pastor of St. Timothy Old Landmark Church of God in Christ, serving 43 years as Senior Pastor.


In addition to his professional endeavors, James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a testament to his commitment to service and duty. Known for his kind-hearted and gentle demeanor, he embodied Christ-like characteristics, making him a role model for Many. Outside of professional and military commitments, James nurtured a vibrant life filled with passions. He cherished moments spent on the golf course, enjoyed watching NFL football - particularly cheering for the Washington Commanders - and relished the intricacies of bowling and professional baseball. These hobbies brought him joy and connected him with friends and family alike.


James is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Parrish Hawkins; four daughters, Marquetta Hawkins, Robin Ford, Roxanne Lamb, and Allecenya Hawkins; one son, Linwood Burton, Jr. (Sharon); and Sister-in-law, Phyllis Parrish Baskerville. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and a doting great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his cherished sister, Pastor Rebecca Seabrook (Eriic), and his brother, Pastor Floyd Hawkins, Sr. (Linda). He was the beloved uncle to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends, all of whom will deeply miss his gentle spirit and unwavering love.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Addie and George Hawkins, and four brothers, George Jr., Clyde Sr., David, and Alexander Hawkins. The absence of these loved ones has left an impact on James' family, reminding them of the importance of family bonds and legacy.


Elder James Henry Hawkins will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and service but for the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him. His spirit will continue to guide his family and friends as they carry forward his memory and the values he so dearly represented.
