Gary Douglas Buckner, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 17, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on March 19, 1950, in Glen Allen, Virginia, Gary embodied a vibrant spirit that drew people to him. His lively personality and commanding presence ensured that he could light up any room he entered. He had a profound love for music and dance, accompanied by a wonderful sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
Gary's educational journey led him to graduate from Patrick Henry, laying the foundation for a life filled with rich experiences. He served honorably in the Army, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a sense of duty and pride.
A devoted family man, Gary was blessed with a loving wife, Shirley Buckner, and together they created a nurturing and supportive home. His beloved children survive him: Vonetta Buckner-Craft, Shanja Buckner, and his bonus children, Frank (Barbara Jean), Tony (Sophia), and Dwight Thompson (Ingrid). His legacy continues through his sixteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom were immensely loved by Gary.
Gary appreciated the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed washing his car, looking out the window, and frequenting his favorite spots, IHOP and McDonald's. His affection for children was unwavering, and he delighted in their laughter and the joy they brought into his life.
He is preceded in death by his son, Gary F. Buckner; his bonus daughter, Vickie Davis; grandchild Tyshawn Buckner and his brother, Larry Buckner (Jackie).
The community will come together to celebrate Gary’s life during a funeral service at Abner Baptist Church located at 15143 Abner Church Road, Glen Allen, Virginia, on June 28, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM, with a concluding service at 12:00 PM.
Gary Douglas Buckner will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and the profound impact he had on the lives of many. His pride in his achievements, particularly during his retirement, allowed him to savor the good life he cherished.
He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends including Lloyd Craft and Travis Vincent, who will hold his memory dear. Gary's spirited essence will surely linger on in the hearts of all who had the honor to know him.
