Geraldine Tisdale Bannister was born on January 3, 1938, in Mecklenburg County, Va., and peacefully passed away on December 10, 2025. She was the eldest of five children of the late James E. Tisdale and Rachel Hutcheson Tisdale. Over the years, she had several cherished nicknames, but she was most affectionately known as “Gee Gee.”
At an early age, Geraldine and the family relocated to Richmond, Va. and joined Fifth Street Baptist Church. After much prayer, the family - along with several faithful members - helped establish Grace Institutional Baptist Church (now The Church of God in Richmond). Geraldine grew with the church and served faithfully until her graduation from Maggie Walker High School.
Following high school, Geraldine spent many years in Philadelphia, Pa., where she worked for the United States Postal Service and became a passionate Philadelphia Eagles fan—often admitting she got too excited to actually watch the games. Through the years, her walk with Christ remained strong as she participated in many outreach services.
In 2006, Geraldine returned to Richmond to care for her parents and rejoined her Virginia church family. She was always proud to be a part of this church community and actively served in several ministries.
Lovingly known as the family’s historian and storyteller, Geraldine loved sharing memories, recounting family history, and offering fun facts that brought joy, laughter, and connection.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Joseph A. Tisdale (Ann); her sister, Kathleen T. Jones (Reginald); her sister-in-law, Joan V. Tisdale; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Geraldine is preceded in death by her beloved son, Vernon Bannister; her parents; and her siblings, Rachel Laverne Frierson and Edward L. Tisdale.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Wanda McGee, Betty Odum and Freddie Rainey for their loving care during her illness.
Geraldine’s life reflected steadfast faith, a servant’s heart, and deep love for family and church. Her legacy will long be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
