Gifford G. Shrieves, a devoted postal service worker, tireless advocate, and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026. Born on June 21, 1957, in Charlottesville, he grew up in an environment that nurtured his vibrant and outgoing spirit, characteristics that would define his life and relationships for decades to come.

A graduate of Charlottesville High School, Gifford dedicated 36 years of his life to the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk, where his commitment to duty and warmth towards his colleagues made him a cherished figure in the workplace. His professional life was marked not just by longevity but by the integrity and care with which he carried out his responsibilities.

Outside of work, Gifford was known for his numerous volunteer efforts and his love of performing shows, activities that brought joy not only to himself but also to all who had the pleasure of witnessing his talents. His advocacy for gay rights stood as a testament to his passionate commitment to equality and justice, reflecting his strong principles and his determination to make a positive impact in the world.

Gifford's personality was a beacon of warmth and compassion. Vibrant, engaging, and loving, he was someone who truly got along with everyone he met. His good-hearted nature was evident in his everyday interactions and in the deep affection he inspired among family and friends alike. Those closest to him remember a man who was outwardly caring and internally motivated by a profound kindness.

His hobbies included baking and cooking, through which he expressed his generosity and creativity, as well as shopping, another activity that brought him happiness and connection to the world around him. Throughout his life, Gifford cherished his life partner, Rytholey Gene Lewis, who stood by his side with unwavering love and support.

He is survived by his three sisters, Ernestine Feggans, Jaqueline Walker, and Valerie Baker; his twin brother Gilbert Shrieves (Faron); his brother David Shrieves (Annette); and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins, a loving Goddaughter and other relatives and friends who will carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by sisters Patricia Wicks and Karen Shrieves, and brothers Albert Shrieves, Robert Shrieves Jr., and Douglas Shrieves.

Among Gifford’s proudest accomplishments was being recognized as a loving and good-hearted individual who was cherished by all who knew him. His legacy is one of kindness, advocacy, and a life lived fully with an open heart.

Gifford G. Shrieves will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the positive and enduring impact he made on those fortunate enough to know him. His spirit lives on in the many lives he touched with love and friendship.
