Herbert Hoover Johnson Jr.

March 3, 1949 — May 21, 2025

Richmond

Herbert Hoover Johnson Jr., fondly known as Butch, was born on March 3, 1949, in Richmond, Virginia. He passed away surrounded by his loving family on May 21, 2025, at the age of 76. Butch was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Butch was raised in the Westend of Richmond as a lifelong member of Riverview Baptist Church. Educated in Richmond, Butch graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School before pursuing a degree in Advertisement from Virginia Commonwealth University. This education laid the foundation for a successful career as a Facilities Director at renowned companies such as Virginia Power, Xerox, and Beatrice Hunt & Wesson. His passion for his work was evident, contributing significantly to each organization he served.

Butch was more than just his professional achievements; he was a family-oriented man who cherished time with his loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cynthia Johnson, their two daughters, Sadika and Nicole Johnson, and one son Herbert Johnson III. He took immense pride in his role as a father and grandfather, leaving behind his two cherished grandsons, Sadiq and Niko. Butch is also remembered by his mother, Helen Lorraine Johnson, and his three brothers, Van Johnson (Diane), Kevin Johnson, and Johnny Johnson (Lisa). In addition, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends, all of whom will deeply miss his warm spirit and kind heart.

A man of interests and intellect, Butch found joy in music, reading, and history, particularly Civil War books and artifacts. His passion for intellectual discoveries often led to engaging discussions that would leave a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to share in them. His contributions extended beyond the family realm; he was proud to be a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and previously affiliated with Prince Hall Masons, where he fostered lifelong friendships and connections within the community. Butch was deeply involved in his community and civic duties as the president and coach of the Highland Springs Little League Association, a committed supporter of Highland Springs High School athletics. He believed strongly in bettering the community ties, submerging himself in local politics.

Butch was preceded in death by his father, Herbert H. Johnson Sr., and his sister, Cynthia Johnson-Thompson, both of whom he held dear in his memory.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on May 29, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at the Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, located at 2011 Grayland Ave, Richmond, VA 23220.
