James Hakim Syed

James Hakim Syed, born on August 28, 1951, in Richmond, Virginia, passed away on June 21, 2025. He was an esteemed Maintenance Instructor and beloved family man, who dedicated his life to nurturing both a successful career and a loving family.

James was a proud veteran, having served honorably in the Army. He carried with him a strong sense of duty and character, traits that were evident in all aspects of his life. A calm and gentle individual, James was known for his serious demeanor and upright character, earning the respect and admiration of everyone who knew him.

He completed his education at Maggie L. Walker, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching. His career as a maintenance instructor reflected his passion for sharing knowledge and helping others grow.

In his free time, James found joy in martial arts and reading, pursuits that enriched his life and provided a framework for his disciplined approach to both work and play. However, nothing was more important to him than spending quality time with his family, which remains a treasured memory for those who loved him.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Rosetta Syed; three children, Jameel Syed (Desiree), Jesse, and Priscilla Harris; and a cherished legacy of six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by his sister, Terri Okumankama (Nana), his brother, Lewis Hackett, four brothers-in law, Zakka Ali, David Hawkes, Yahya Alimin, and Larry Hawkes (Tina), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends who cherished his presence.

He was predeceased by his father, James Hackett, and mother, Helena Hackett, whose influence undoubtedly shaped the man he became.

A funeral service in honor of James Hakim Syed will be held on June 25, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM at the Joseph Jenkins Jr Funeral Home, located at 2011 Grayland Ave, Richmond, VA, 23220, with services concluding at 12:00 PM. His legacy of love, respect, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him.
