Joseph Davis Horne departed this life peacefully on May 15, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born on June 17, 1933, in Hopewell, Virginia, the fourth of five sons to the late Jacob Jesse Earl Horne, Sr. and Irma Alice Horne. The family relocated to Jackson Ward where he formed lifelong connections within the community.
Joseph graduated from Armstrong High School in 1950. He continued his education at Virginia Union University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955. During a brief pause in his academic journey, Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Army. Later he resumed his studies and went on to earn a master’s degree from Virginia State College.
Joseph was a devoted educator working a little over thirty years as a science teacher. He retired from John F. Kennedy High School in 1990. He held high expectations for his students and was deeply committed to helping them succeed. His encouragement, discipline, and belief in their potential inspired many to strive for excellence both in and beyond the classroom.
Joseph gave his life to Christ at an early age. He was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church on Idlewood Avenue, where he served in many capacities, most notably as Sunday School Superintendent. His dedication to nurturing and guiding young people left a lasting and meaningful impression on their lives.
Joseph was known for attending community events and his love of sports, especially for his beloved Virginia Union University. He traveled near and far supporting the Panthers. He was also a huge Washington Redskins fan.
Joseph will be remembered for his deep love for the Lord and for the kindness, compassion, and unwavering support shown to all. He was a brother, an uncle, a mentor, and a cherished friend to many.
Joseph is preceded in death by his brothers Jacob Jesse Earl Horne, Jr; James Willam Robinson Horne; and Alvin Eugene Horne, Sr. He is survived by one brother, Nathaniel Horne of New York; three nieces, among them Alycia Elam (Edward); one nephew; two great nieces; a host of great nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 26, 2026,, from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. Interment, private.
