Joyce Abbott, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her daughter Paula's home in Maidens, Virginia, after a long and courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Born on February 8, 1944, in Richmond, Virginia, Joyce was a beacon of strength and grace throughout her life, touching many with her compassion and unwavering dedication to her family and God.
Joyce was the cherished daughter of Webb Bartel Carroll and Pauline Frances Gardner Carroll, whose love and guidance shaped her into the remarkable woman she became. A bright student, Joyce graduated from Hermitage High School in 1962. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Pan American Business School, where she honed the skills that would later serve her well in her professional endeavors. She began her career with distinction, working for Governor Mills Godwin, where her diligence and integrity were highly regarded. Her last job was working for York County as an Administrative Assistant, where she worked for many years before retiring. On December 14, 1963, Joyce married the love of her life, Ralph (Buddy) Wayne Abbott. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, nurturing a family that would come to include their three devoted children: Paula Sue Abbott (husband Graham H. Bryant), Melissa Abbott Moore (husband Scott Moore), and David Wayne Abbott. Though Buddy preceded her in death in 1998, the love they shared was a testament to the strength of their union and a source of inspiration for their children.
Joyce was a proud and doting grandmother to eight grandchildren: Matthew Abbott, Savannah Beatley, Trip Kuemmerle, Faith Moore, Mason Abbott, Emily Moore, Adaline Abbott and Jocelyn Abbott. She cherished each moment with them, delighting in their achievements and supporting their dreams with her boundless love.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Joyce is survived by her siblings, Ronnie Carroll and Judy Carroll Snyder, who were her lifelong companions and confidants; a brother-in-law, Gerald (Jerry) Abbott; a daughter-in-law, Sarah-Davis Lalonde Abbott; multiple nieces and nephews; and too many friends to count. Her family was her greatest joy, and her legacy will live on through the values and love she instilled in them.
Joyce's life was marked by her resilience, kindness, and unwavering faith in God. Her strength in the face of adversity was an inspiration to all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and a life lived with purpose.
A Memorial Service will be held in the near future to honor our mom's memory and will be announced soon.
Joyce Abbott will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love and admiration by all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in the arms of Jesus, reunited with those who have gone before her, and forever in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
