Kevin Orville Brooks

Kevin Orville Brooks was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, and friend, with a smile that could light up a room. He was born on December 3, 1962, and passed away on August 21, 2026.

Kevin was educated in Richmond Public Schools and later worked in construction and cleaning services. He always took pride in his work.

Among the many things Kevin loved were fashion, food, music, and birthdays. He always made sure he was dressed in stylish outfits, showing off the latest brands and shoes that reflected his personality and made him feel confident. He loved to shop, just like his mother. He also loved his mother’s cooking and enjoyed the food shared by his brothers and sisters.

On any given day, you could find Kevin standing with his headphones on, listening to a variety of music ranging from country and hip hop to old-school gospel. Music was where he found peace, and he could remain in that peaceful place for hours at a time. Kevin also experienced a great deal of joy, especially around his birthday. He would make sure everyone knew, saying, “My birthday is coming up!” and then proudly singing, “Happy birthday to me!”

Kevin had a unique view of the world and loved sharing his perspective with anyone who would listen. He often shared little nuggets of wisdom with his family members. One of his last phrases was, “I can believe in myself”—a meaningful reminder to never give up and to remember that we are all capable and powerful.

Kevin deeply appreciated the love and support of his family throughout the years and his memory lives on through them. He is survived by his sisters, Malinda Brooks-Williams and Delores Kimbrough; his brother, Larry Brooks; and his nieces and nephews, Faith Brooks, Freddie Brooks Jr., Lauren Williams, Lawrence Williams, Bryan Wright, Jason Wright, and Nicole Wright-Johnson.

Preceding Kevin in death are his beloved mother, Cora Elizabeth Brooks; father, James Brooks; sister, Janet Wright; and brothers, Freddie Brooks Sr. and Gregory Brooks. Each of them held a special place in Kevin’s heart, as he did in theirs.

To honor Kevin’s legacy and celebrate his life, a Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 5, 2026, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph St., Richmond, VA 23220.

Kevin was resilient. He showed that although you may go through challenges, it is possible to get back up, grow stronger, and still keep a good heart. He will forever be remembered for his loving spirit, his infectious joy, his unique perspective on life, and the smile that brightened every room he entered.
