Listen to Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Leon W. Thornton, Sr., who departed this life on March 5, 2026, at the age of 86.

Leon was born on July 29, 1939, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to Arthur Thornton and Virginia Lynch. He was known for his remarkable ability to fix anything, his big personality, and his unwavering dedication to his family. Leon had a strong presence, a generous heart, and a gift for making those around him feel supported and cared for.

He dedicated over 15 years of service as Lead Engineer at The Jefferson Hotel, where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike. His work ethic, skill, and leadership left a lasting impression. Outside of work, Leon found joy in repairing and building things, sharing his advice and wisdom with anyone who needed guidance, and forming lifelong friendships. If something was broken, Leon could fix it — and if someone needed encouragement, he was there.

Above all, Leon cherished his family. He was a loving husband to his beloved wife, Pauline Thornton, with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage before her passing. Their union was built on love and strength.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Thornton, his son, Franklin Dale Hill, and his siblings; James Howard Thornton, Arthur Thornton, Eugene Thornton, Eula Sattlewhite, and Elton Thornton.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his children: Leon W. Thornton, Jr. (Fern), Sheila Mae Thornton, Brandon Leon Hill, Andre J. Thornton and wife Phyllis, and Tangileaq Ly’onna Russell and husband Eric Nixon; his sister, Marie Bagley; and his cherished grandchildren: Danielle Thornton, Lakeisha Thornton, Deon Thornton, Demond Thornton, Thomas Henderson, Leon Thornton III, Courtney Reddick, Taylor Thornton, Keon Thornton, Tiondra Thornton, Ryan Graves, Andre Graves, Fiona Hill, DJ Hill, April Hill, and Theia Nixon. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Leon shared special lifelong friendships with Tony Witcher and Sean Kearney.

Though he will be deeply missed, Leon’s love, laughter, wisdom, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.

A viewing for family and friends will be held Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home. No formal services will be performed. A repast will follow afterward.
