A Lifetime of Love and Memories

Loretta Hayes Richardson, 70, entered eternal rest on July 4, 2025, in Cary, NC. Loretta was a devoted, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and mentor to many. She loved gardening, shopping, and especially cooking for others-her specialty was her famous rum cake and homemade rolls.

Loretta had a heart for helping others, especially babies, and dedicated over 40 years to a career in healthcare. She will be lovingly remembered for her compassion, her unwavering support of those she loved, and her signature red lipstick.

Loretta was born on June 18, 1955, in Chase City, VA, to the late Douglas and Dena Hayes. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sandra Harris, and her brother, Walter Hayes. She leaves behind two brothers and three sisters: Douglas Hayes Jr., Linda Hayes, Juliette Brandon, Edward Hayes, and Mercile Hayes. She is also survived by her devoted son, Tarik Richardson, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. Loretta also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, cousins, and one devoted aunt, Amy Butler.

Loretta began her education in Chase City, graduating from the Mecklenburg County School System. She went on to attend Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, before moving to Richmond, VA, where she studied nursing at Richmond Memorial School of Nursing. Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to further her education at Virginia Commonwealth University, Liberty University, Saint Xavier University, and Drexel University, earning multiple advanced degrees and credentials.

In Fall 2022, Loretta became a proud member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.

She received Christ at an early age at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Chase City, VA. She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church in Richmond, VA, before moving her membership to St. Paul’s Baptist Church, also in Richmond.

In September 1977, Loretta married Julius Richardson. From that union, their beloved son Tarik was born in July 1979. After retiring from a successful 40-year career in healthcare, Loretta began a new chapter with Edward “T” Jones, a familiar face from her past. Together, they blended their families and their lives with love and laughter, ultimately moving to Apex, NC, to enjoy their next chapter.

Loretta fought a courageous battle while continuing to give herself selflessly to her loved ones. She ultimately passed peacefully. Though her fight is over, those who love her must now find a way to move forward with only her memory—and the lasting impact of her love, compassion, and strength to guide us.

                                                                                                      The Acknowledgements

Our family wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation and deep gratitude for every act of love, thoughtfulness, care, and affection shown during this time of loss. May God bless you abundantly for your compassion and support.
