Memtha “Clem” Evans, Jr., affectionately known as Pat, passed away peacefully in his wife’s arms on January 7, 2026, at the age of 80.
Born on June 16, 1945, in Brodnax, Virginia, he was the beloved son of the late Memtha “Clem” Evans, Sr. and Lacy G. Evans.Clem graduated from James S. Russell High School, Class of 1963, where he played drums in the school band and was known as the best dresser — a distinction his family credited to his brothers.
He was also a member of the New Farmers of America. He served as an Air Police Officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967, then worked in security with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, he joined the Metropolitan Police Department, serving until his retirement in 1991. He later continued in federal law enforcement with the United States Marshals Service under the Department of Justice, serving into the early 2000s.In 1972, Clem became a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Temple. He was a longtime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in his hometown and later in life joined Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings James (Jim) Evans, Charlie (Peter) Evans, Mathew (“Po Boy”) Evans, and Madeline (Jeanette) Evans. He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Evans; his daughter, Kisha Carter (Sherman); and his devoted son, Memtha “Clem” Evans III (Vanessa Belance). He is also survived by his siblings Lacy (Liz) Hill, George (Bubba) Evans, and Velma (“Val”) McCray; his sisters-in-law, Mary Williams (William) and Theodora White (Anthony); and a host of nieces and nephews. Clem was a loving grandfather to Damon, Daytoya, and I’Asia, and a cherished great-grandfather to Imari, Raiden, and Nova. He also leaves behind devoted friends Rickie Taylor (Debbie), Forest Tracey, Penny Gentry, and Nadine Burnside; his godsons Dennis Taylor and Zion Addison (Lupe); his goddaughter Kendi Joshua; along with extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
One of Clem’s favorite songs was “My Way” by Frank Sinatra — a fitting reflection of the independence and pride with which he lived his life.
