Merdie E. Johnson

Merdie E. Johnson, born on January 31, 1939, passed away on September 17, 2026.

Merdie will be remembered as a warm and vibrant woman whose genuine spirit and infectious humor left a lasting impression on those around her. She had a gift for communicating with people every day and truly enjoyed conversation, bringing kindness, energy, and welcome companionship into the lives of many. Her presence was one that brightened ordinary moments and made others feel seen and valued.

She was educated at Maggie Walker High School in Richmond, Virginia, and went on to work in retail at Thalhimers. Through her work and throughout her life, Merdie’s ability to connect with others was a defining part of who she was. Her warmth, lively nature, and sincere way with people will be remembered with great affection.

Merdie is survived by her son, Wayne Johnson. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Marian Giles and Ruby Johnson, and by Edwin; her brothers James Epps and Bruce Epps; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and frinds. Together, they carry forward the memory of a woman whose life was marked by heart, humor, and a genuine love of daily connection with others.

She was preceded in death by her husband Spencer Johnson Jr., her father, George Epps, and her mother, Mary Epps.

A funeral service will be held on September 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 1902 Rosewood Ave, Richmond, VA 23220.

Merdie E. Johnson will be remembered with love and gratitude by those who knew her, and her memory will remain a blessing to her family and friends.
