Raymond James Garrett Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on July 9, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on May 9, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, Raymond was a dedicated federal investigator for the U.S. government, a career that reflected his commitment to serving his country and ensuring justice.

Raymond's early education was grounded in the New York City Public School System. His passion for service was further exemplified through his military service in the United States Marine Corps, where he took great pride in being a part of something greater than himself. One of his proudest accomplishments was receiving his associate’s degree and joining the Marine Corps, which he held in high esteem.

Beyond his professional life, Raymond was deeply devoted to his family. He loved his family dearly, often expressing his affection in numerous ways. He relished spending time with his loved ones, including his beloved wife, Melissa Tatum-Garrett, his two daughters, Misha Dunbar Howell (Austin) and Dominique Garrett, and his two sons, Raymond Garrett and Deon Garrett (Tiyea). He also embraced his role as a stepfather to Kevin Tatum (Molly) and was blessed with a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, bringing joy to his life.

Raymond was known for his huge sense of humor, classy dressing, and a compassionate heart. He had a profound love of music especially the group, The Main Ingredient. He had an enduring love for children and always engaged them with warmth and kindness. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and watching movies, activities that allowed him to embrace the simple yet fulfilling moments of life.

Raymond is survived by his loving wife Melissa, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, five sisters, five brothers, and several nieces, among them Madison Cunningham,  nephews, and other relatives and friends along with bonus family, the  Rev Charles Scott and family with Estelle Scott and Barbara Winborn who will carry forward his legacy of love and laughter. He was predeceased by his parents, Carrie and Raymond Garrett Sr., and his twin brother, Waymond Garrett.

A memorial service to celebrate Raymond’s life will be held on August 9, 2025, at Joseph Jenkins Jr Funeral Home, located at 2011 Grayland Ave, Richmond, VA 23220, starting at 11:00 AM.

Raymond James Garrett Jr. will be remembered not just for his professional achievements but for the love he shared with those around him and the indelible mark he left on their hearts.
