William Robert Mayo Jr., a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on July 24, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on September 18, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia, William led a life characterized by joy, warmth, and a deep-seated love for his family and community.
A proud veteran of the Army, William served with honor and distinction. One of his proudest accomplishments was being a paratrooper, a testament to his courage and dedication. After his military service, he became a valued member of the workforce as a production worker and forklift operator with Whitehall Robins, where he was appreciated for his cheerful demeanor and his ability to connect with others.
William’s educational journey began at Maggie L. Walker High School in Richmond, Virginia, where he laid the foundation for a life that would be rich in relationships and experiences. He was known for his upbeat and friendly personality, traits that endeared him to everyone who was lucky enough to cross his path. His love for people was evident, and he thrived in environments that allowed him to interact with others especially as member of the St. Paul's Baptist Church.
An active member of the Virginia Union sports boosters club, William had a passion for watching sports and loved spending his free time fishing. His enthusiasm for these activities was infectious, often bringing family and friends together in joyous camaraderie.
He is remembered fondly by his wife, Adrienne Mayo; his daughters, Michelle and Dana Michelle Mayo, and Sharnena Davenport; and his sons, William Robert Prince (Lakeita) and Brien Donnell Mayo. This loving family includes ten grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom cherished his guidance and support. William also leaves behind his brother, Kenneth Mayo (Winda), mother in law Constance Gilliam, two brothers in law Curtis Gilliam(Latonya) and Stepeny Gilliam Jr.(Lydia) along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many relatives and friends who will deeply miss him.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and William R. Mayo Sr., who laid the groundwork for his values and character. His legacy of love, laughter, and service to others will continue to inspire those who knew him. William Robert Mayo will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
